1. Holly Street Fire Hall
1600 Holly St
Nashville, TN 37206

The Holly Street fire station, or Engine Co. 14, has been around since 1917, and it’s a beautiful, historically restored old building. I live just two blocks from the fire house, and in addition to still being a fully functional fire station, it’s a source of pride for the entire community.

Engine Company 14 recently underwent some pricey renovations, and it was reopened in a ribbon-cutting ceremony just this week. It’s a spectacular old building that’s lovely to make the destination of an idle afternoon stroll, and they have a really nice swing on their front lawn that I know for a fact they let civilians swing on.

I typically try to stick to restaurant or small business reviews, but I just couldn’t pass up such a nice little historical landmark. If you’re in the neighborhood (and especially if you’re a Nashville history buff), you should definitely check it out.

The owners of the shop are fabulous. Boy-Toy and I chatted them up as I bought several postcards and posters (whoops, family Xmas gift spoiler!) They offered a small tour of the back of the shop where we got to take a look at the presses and blocks that they use. Jim, Boy-Toy and I discussed Upstate/Buffalo NY and what it would take to bring Buffalo back to it’s former grandeur. It was a great interaction and interesting to get an “outsiders” point of view on my current city.

I’m not in the business. I’m not the arty/creative/graphic design/commercial artist type of person. I just appreciate fun, vintage signs whether they be on paper or bolted to a building/the ground.

Awesome shop!

3. Centennial Park

The park was beautifully maintained! Wow. It had walking trails/sidewalks everywhere, plenty of shade, and plenty of space to walk around and view the Parthenon. My toddler and I spent an hour there and wished it were closer to our home 2 hours away. This is a great stop in Nashville!

Off in the distance, I spotted the Centennial Cafe. It looked like an outdoor cafe that was just outside the southeast corner of the Parthenon. I’m not sure what the prices were or what their menu was, but refreshments are available.

The place has limited hours, but if you can take the time to look up the hours and make plans appropriately, this is by far the best gallery in town. I was completely blown away by the talent and how much the artists displayed inspired me.

The stuff is original and warm, just like the people working there. They have an assortment of jewelry, paintings, manipulations, felting, ceramics, and probably more that I’m just not thinking of. The prices are fair, and are not really out of most people’s price ranges.

I love this place.
